Ibadan-based comedian, Ayo Ajewole, popularly known as Woli Agba, recently shared a deeply emotional story about the heartbreaking loss of his last daughter, during the naming ceremony of his newborn baby at Mouve 21, which took place a few weeks ago.
The comedian, who is well-loved for his unique style of humor, recounted how, just a few years ago, he had been scheduled to perform at the very same Mouve 21 when he received a life-altering phone call. He was informed that his wife had just given birth. However, upon arriving at the hospital, he was devastated to learn that the child had tragically passed away shortly after birth.
Despite the overwhelming grief, Woli Agba faced a daunting decision. He explained that after learning of the loss, he had to carry the lifeless body of his baby to his car before heading back to the venue to perform. “As a comedian, I had to perform, make people happy, and ensure they felt they got value for their money. All while mourning the loss of my child,” Woli Agba said.
He shared how, during the event, guests and fans still approached him to take selfies and share laughs, unaware of the deep pain he was experiencing inside. Woli Agba maintained his composure, fighting back tears, and ensured that he did not allow his personal grief to interfere with his performance.
After the show, he quietly returned to his car, where the corpse of his child was laid. He drove home, holding on to a flicker of hope that somehow, miraculously, his baby might be revived. Sadly, that was not the case, and the baby was later laid to rest.
Despite the painful memory, Woli Agba expressed gratitude and joy at the birth of his new baby girl. He was especially moved by the fact that, just like the child he lost, this new bundle of joy was also a baby girl. He revealed how this experience had given him a renewed sense of appreciation for life and family.
The joyful naming ceremony was attended by a diverse crowd, including fellow artists, comedians, radio presenters, and several well-wishers. The event was a testament to the support Woli Agba has garnered from his peers in the entertainment industry.
