A group within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State, known as “the Articulate Progressives,” has expressed strong disapproval of what they described as a clandestine move by former First Lady of the state, Chief (Mrs.) Florence Ajimobi, to take control of the party’s structure following the death of her husband, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, five years ago.
Senator Abiola Ajimobi served as the governor of Oyo State from 2011 to 2019, notably being the first governor to break the jinx of ruling the state for two consecutive terms.
His tenure was characterized by significant infrastructural development and reforms aimed at boosting the state’s economy.
In a statement issued by the group’s Chairman, Alhaji Kayode Adelani, and Secretary, Adepoju Ayodeji, they emphasised that the political landscape should not be dictated by familial ties but rather by merit and the collective will of the party’s members.
They stated, “We recognize the contributions of the late Senator Ajimobi to the party and the state, but we believe that leadership should be earned through service and dedication, not inherited.”
The statement added that the party’s structure should remain democratic and accessible to all members, urging that no individual should monopolize power simply because of their marital relationship to a former leader.
“Political parties thrive on inclusivity and diversity of thought. We must avoid the pitfalls of dynastic politics,” they noted.
In reflecting on historical precedents, the group cited examples of notable political figures in Nigeria, saying, “When Chief Obafemi Awolowo passed away, his wife did not take over the party structure, just as the widows of other prominent leaders have not assumed control of their parties. We must uphold this tradition of democratic governance.”
The group, however, urged the former First Lady to engage in constructive political activities that would contribute positively to the APC and the state.
“We encourage Chief (Mrs.) Ajimobi to focus on community development and empowerment initiatives rather than attempting to seize control of the party,” they said.
The Articulate Progressives called for unity within the party and urged all members to work collaboratively towards strengthening the APC’s position in Oyo State.
“Let us build a party that represents the voices of the people, not just the interests of a few,” they concluded.
