Oyo 2027: “Leadership Is A Call Beyond Begging” by Dr. Adewale Kolapo Kareem (AKK)

AKK is a gubernatorial Aspirant in Oyo State in 2027.

Leadership isn’t a crown to wear, it is a pact, a silent vow between one soul and the millions who lean on it. I see it as a fire that burns for the people’s dreams, not a cushy seat to doze in. Yet, too often, we Nigerians watch leaders climb the ladder only to forget the climb was for us. They sit, smug and wait for pleas or protests to nudge them into motion, as if duty is a favour they might toss our way. This isn’t leadership; it’s a mockery of it. Reality bites when the roads stay broken and the markets limp, not because the job is too hard, but because some need begging to care.

I’ve learned this truth across years, that power is a tricky beast; it whispers sweet nothings until it owns you. But the real sting isn’t in its grip; it’s in us, the people, letting it slide when leaders slack. We shouldn’t have to march or shout just to see promises kept; leadership is not a trade where we barter for crumbs. When we beg, we hand them a whip to crack instead of a torch to light the way. My conviction is clear: a leader who needs prodding has already lost the plot, and the cracks in our walls will prove it every day.

Look around. Our democracy is old enough to find more than enough to make reference to; when leaders falter, the fallout isn’t theirs alone. It’s the trader’s empty stall and shop, the kid’s dim classroom, the family name whispered with a wince. History doesn’t play soft; it carves failures into stone, not as heroes but as lessons with a sneer. I’ve seen it in crumbling estates and faded plaques; once-proud legacies now just echoes of what could’ve been. In truth to myself and my ideology, I refuse that script. Leadership is a relay, not a solo sprint; if you drop the baton, your whole line stumbles for generations.

The mind takes a hit, too — imagine the weight of knowing you’ve let a state and millions of people down. Stress gnaws, regret festers, and the mirror shows a stranger who traded honour for ease. I’ve walked enough paths, local and global, to know this: a leader begged to act isn’t driven from within; they’re puppets to the crowd’s roar. That’s no way to govern. My run for Oyo’s helm isn’t about applause; it’s about a fire inside me to build, not be begged into it. Nigerians deserve more than reluctant hands; we need builders who wake up hungry to serve.

Our society unravels when leaders doze; trust frays, rules bend, and hope gets rationed out like scarce fuel. I’ve seen names go from cheers to jeers, families shrink from the spotlight because their leader chose a throne over a plow. That’s not my road, and it’ll never be. I’m here because the good people of Oyo State aren’t pawns to coax me, rather, they’re the pulse of my purpose. Leadership is a weight I’ll carry with eyes wide open, knowing the price of failure isn’t just mine; it’s a shadow on kids yet to be born, a debt I won’t let them pay.

So, here’s my stand and position – don’t beg me to lead; I’m already running toward it. Nigerians shouldn’t have to haggle for what’s owed them; the future of Oyo state shouldn’t hinge on nudges. My brilliance isn’t in words alone; it’s in the grit to turn vision into pavement and turn schools and markets into a humming place. I stake this run on a truth sharper than any plea – leadership is a call to sweat, not sleep. When history writes our chapter, let it say we lifted a state; not because we begged, but because we believed and built it together.
