Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, may soon initiate a major cabinet shake-up as preparations for the 2027 general elections quietly gather momentum, a reliable source within the government has disclosed.
According to the source, who spoke to westernmirror.com.ng on Tuesday, under the condition of anonymity, the planned reshuffle is aimed at repositioning the state’s executive council for improved performance, political balance, and strategic alignment with the governor’s 2027 political priorities.
This online newspaper had earlier reported that Makinde, on Monday, May 5, carried out a minor cabinet cabinet reshuffle.
The governor, in a letter signed by his Chief of Staff, Otunba Segun Ogunwuyi, yesterday redeployed Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Barr. Seun Ashamu, to the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, while the current Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Hon Abdulmojeed Mogbonjubola, moved to the Ministry of Public Works, Infrastructure and Transport.
The Commissioner for Public Works, Prof Dahud Shangodoyin, was moved to the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources. The Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof Solihu Adelabu, was moved to the Ministry of Establishments and Training, while the current Commissioner for Establishments, Hon Segun Olayiwola, was redeployed to the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology.
The source however, hinted that discussions within the governor’s kitchen cabinet indicates that some strategic appointments may be announced soon to solidify grassroots mobilization drive ahead of 2027.
“With just about two years to the next general elections, he (the governor) is becoming more focused on his legacy, performance, and consolidation on his achievements.
“Those who have failed to meet expectations will most likely be replaced with more vibrant and committed fresh hands but I think it would happen after May 29 which marks the first two years of this second term administration.
“I think the minor cabinet reshuffle yesterday was a prelude to what is building up in term of a major cabinet shake-up. You know there are certain statutory benefits due to appointees after two years of service but regardless, I think some commissioners are aware they’re already closed to the exit door.
The source further revealed that Governor Makinde has already begun discreet consultations with party leaders, technocrats, and political stakeholders in a bid to bring fresh energy and strengthen his political base ahead of 2027.
“Don’t forget that Makinde remains one of the PDP’s most visible governors and a potential rallying point for the party in the Nigeria as of today. Any move he makes now, whether in appointments or alliances, will have 2027 written all over it.”
The governor is also said to be considering balancing the interests of various political blocs within the state.
Should the anticipated cabinet reshuffle materialize, it would not be the first time Governor Makinde has taken bold administrative decisions.
Known for his decisive leadership and technocratic style, he has previously dissolved and reconstituted parts of his executive council in pursuit of transformative governance.
For now, all eyes remain on the Governor’s Office at Agodi, where a mix of anticipation and anxiety is building among commissioners, special advisers, and other top political appointees.
