OYO 2027:DEMOCRACY DAY STATEMENT BY DR. ADEWALE KOLAPO KAREEM (AKK) – JUNE 12, 2025.

In utmost credence to the value of today, I pause to honour the brave heroes who have shaped our nation’s journey. Past presidents, statesmen, and leaders alike who have devoted their lives to serve Nigeria, protecting our nationhood through times of war, diplomatic efforts, and tireless advocacy. Their sacrifices laid the foundation for the freedom we enjoy today, and we must never forget the blood, sweat, and vision they poured into building a united Nigeria. Equally, I salute the unseen heroes—ordinary citizens who, day after day, quietly give their all to keep our democracy alive through their resilience, community service, and unwavering hope.

On this day of democratic significance, I extend my warmest greetings to the memory of Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, whose legacy we celebrate as the heart of June 12. His courage and sacrifice in the struggle for democracy, tragically cut short, remain an emblem for us all. To his family, to all well-meaning individuals preserving his name, and to those writing books or organising events in his honour, I offer my deepest respect and gratitude. Let us continue to water the seed of our democracy, preserving the struggles fought by Abiola and others, and ensure their dreams live on through our actions and commitment to a just society.

I wish to respectfully pay tribute to all lovers of democracy across Nigeria, whose belief in this system inspires me personally. I am convinced that democracy, despite its challenges and loopholes, remains the best model for good governance. The alternatives—autocratic or military rule—have shown dire consequences, stifling individual aspirations and national progress. My years as an educator and advocate have taught me that a democracy, when preserved, can empower every citizen and give true voice to the voiceless, equally advance development that reflects our collective will.
In the cause of our celebration, I urge every Nigerian to remain nationalistic in thought and action, and make daily efforts to improve our lives and strengthen our democracy. I wish to encourage governments at all levels, especially at the subnationals to prioritise citizens’ welfare, and ensure there is access to education, healthcare, and jobs—while strengthening our democratic institutions, including electoral systems, lawmaking, and the judiciary. A democracy thrives when its people are cared for and its systems are robust, and I believe we can achieve this together.
On this Democracy Day, let us renew our pledge to build a Nigeria we can all be proud of. I am committed to supporting this vision, drawing on my passion for good governance to contribute to Oyo state and the nation at large. Let us continue to honour our heroes, learn from our past, and work tirelessly for a future where democracy delivers prosperity for all. May God bless Nigeria as we move forward in unity and purpose. Happy Democracy Day to Nigerians, home and abroad.
