As the 2027 governorship race in Oyo State gradually gathers momentum, several prominent members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) have begun to show quiet but strong interest in taking over from the incumbent Governor, Seyi Makinde. Though none of the aspirants have made public declarations, political activities and underground consultations suggest that the battle for the Agodi Government House has begun in earnest.
Among the leading figures believed to be eyeing the governorship seat is Ambassador Taofeek Arapaja, a seasoned politician, former deputy governor, and current Deputy National Chairman (South) of the PDP. His long-standing political experience and influence within the party structure put him in a formidable position.
Another strong contender is Hon. Stanley Adedeji Olajide, popularly known as “Odidi Omo,” the current federal lawmaker representing Ibadan North West/South West Federal Constituency. Young, dynamic, and widely accepted, Odidi Omo has built a reputation as a grassroots politician with significant followership.
Also in the race is Dr. Nureni Adeniran, the current Chairman of the Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB). A regular face in past governorship contests, Dr. Adeniran is again believed to be preparing for another shot, though some analysts consider him a perennial aspirant who may struggle to gain the needed momentum.
Perhaps the wealthiest among the aspirants is Chief Adegboyega Taofeek Adegoke, a successful businessman and respected chartered accountant. His political profile may not be as strong as others, but his financial strength is unmatched. His billboards and posters are already visible across major towns and cities in the state, a clear signal of his interest and readiness.
Interestingly, reports from within Governor Makinde’s inner circle allegedly suggest he may be grooming a less politically exposed individual to succeed him. Dr. Debo Akande, the Governor’s Executive Assistant on Agribusiness, is said to enjoy the governor’s confidence and could be his preferred successor.
Anonymous insiders claim Governor Makinde is considering Dr. Akande to ensure a smooth transition and retain some influence after his tenure. By supporting someone with less political baggage and public ambition, the governor could secure a “soft landing” and maintain relevance within the state’s political structure.
While the political scene in Oyo remains relatively calm for now, the months ahead promise intense power plays and strategic alignments as the PDP prepares to maintain its stronghold in the state. The outcome of this succession battle will not only shape the future of the party but also determine the political direction of Oyo State for years to come.
