Hon. (Dr) Dawood Olalere (D-Al-Ameen) Moves Motion for Special Medical Intervention Programmes in Oyo State

Ibadan, Nigeria – The Oyo State House of Assembly on Tuesday witnessed a passionate call for urgent government intervention in the healthcare sector as Hon. Dawood Olalere moved a motion seeking the introduction of Special Medical Intervention Programmes for indigent patients battling chronic and life-threatening diseases in the state.

In his presentation, Dr. Olalere stressed that access to quality healthcare is a fundamental right of every citizen and a key measure of a government’s commitment to the welfare of its people. He noted that while the Oyo State Health Insurance Agency (OYSHIA) has provided commendable support to enrolled residents, its coverage does not extend to critical conditions requiring expensive treatment such as dialysis, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, transplants, and specialized surgeries.

“Many lives are being lost unnecessarily to treatable conditions. Preventable deaths continue to rise in our state simply because timely medical interventions and government-backed financial support are lacking,” Olalere said.

The lawmaker, therefore, resolved to urge the Executive Arm of Government, through the Ministry of Health and OYSHIA, to establish a Special Medical Assistance Fund dedicated to indigent residents suffering from chronic and life-threatening illnesses such as kidney failure, heart disease, cancer, leukemia, lymphoma, and other critical conditions.

The motion further recommended:

Partnering with tertiary hospitals, NGOs, private health institutions, and philanthropists to pool resources and technical support for sustained service delivery.

Expanding the scope of OYSHIA to include subsidized dialysis, cancer treatment, major surgical operations, and diagnostic testing.

Developing policy guidelines, eligibility criteria, and funding mechanisms for the Special Medical Assistance Fund.

In addition, Olalere urged the Ministry of Information and Civic Orientation to launch a massive public awareness campaign on the new programme once established. He emphasized the need for residents to take advantage of the health insurance scheme for early diagnosis and proper medical care.

The motion received attention as a timely intervention, with expectations that the Executive Arm of Government will consider its adoption to ease the medical burdens of vulnerable citizens in Oyo State.
