A member of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Hon. (Dr) Dawood Olalere D-Al-Ameen, has expressed deep sorrow and outrage over the killing of a secondary school student allegedly shot by a police officer in Alakia, Ibadan. The student, who was reportedly on his way to sit for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WAEC), died in what has been described as a senseless and avoidable tragedy.
In a statement issued on Monday, Dr. D-Al-Ameen, who represents the Ibadan NorthWest State Constituency, extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and called for swift and transparent justice.
“This is a heartbreaking and unnecessary loss of a young life,” he stated.
“According to eyewitnesses, the student was struck by a police bullet during a chase involving a vehicle. It is a reckless and devastating act that has robbed a family of their child and the nation of a future leader.”
The lawmaker, known for his advocacy on youth development, emphasized the emotional toll the incident has taken on the community and urged the authorities to act decisively.
“No parent should ever experience such pain. I stand with the family in this moment of grief and demand immediate action,” he said. “The Commissioner of Police in Oyo State must ensure that the officer involved is identified, arrested, and prosecuted without delay. There must be no cover-up and no denial of justice.”
Dr. D-Al-Ameen also used the occasion to highlight broader concerns about the conduct of security operatives in Nigeria. He called for urgent reforms in law enforcement agencies, including retraining and stricter accountability measures to prevent further incidents of police brutality.
“This tragic event underscores the need for systemic reform. Law enforcement must be synonymous with protection, not fear and danger,” he said. “We must all say never again to such tragedies. The safety of our children must be our highest priority.”
The incident has sparked public outrage across social media, with many calling for justice and better police oversight.
However, the lawmaker sent his heartfelt condolences to the family of the slain student and prayed that God comforts the family.
