I have repeatedly mouthed the concept of decency, operating in political and nonpolitical atmosphere with some sense of conscience and frowning at corrupt actions, – and I feel we we need to reiterate it for the general consciousness of all, and for the good of the most vulnerable of our society. Ultimately, it is not too much to reaffirm ideas that does the populace general good.
I subscribe to the fact that trust is the bedrock of any functioning society, the glue that holds relationships together, and the cornerstone of effective leadership. It’s indeed the outcome of consistent, honest, and reliable actions, built and purified over time by perseverance and diligence. Apparently, it is through endurance that trustworthiness is tested, tried, and proven. This enduring allegiance to integrity is indeed a source of inspiration, it illuminates darkness and guides others through the various complexities of life.
However, in societies ravaged by corruption, the path to trust is littered with obstacles. Individuals who choose integrity over expediency face an uphill battle, they often suffer from neglect, undervaluation, or even ostracism. Their unfaltering obligation to honesty is frequently met with skepticism, and their values are constantly challenged. Yet, it’s precisely this resilience that earns them the trust and admiration of others.
Corruption is a cancer that eats away the very essence of why we have societies in the first instance, it leaves destruction and despair in its wake. It is a manifestation of helmsmen who couldn’t hold on to trust. It’s a pervasive problem that affects all of us, the poorest citizen or even the highest echelons of power. But it’s not just a moral issue, it has real-world consequences that hinder economic growth, undermine trust in institutions, and perpetuate inequality at all levels. The effects are particularly debilitating, it prevents the realisation of our full potential and capacity to do well.
Yet, despite the daunting challenge ahead, I am strongly convinced that corruption can be wiped off, trust can be built, – and I have a commitment to disengage corrupt practices at all levels in Oyo State should I be given the power. I am rightfully aware it is demanding and won’t be easy, but I believe that with determination, uniform action, and the willingness to confront the root causes, it’s achieveable, and we can bring around an actual and deserving future for ourselves and the generations to come. If we strengthen the citizens more, cut the red tapes, and employ the power of technology, we can achieve a more transparent, accountable, and just society that everyone will feel happy about.
Trustworthy individuals pose a threat to the status quo in this unpredictable and slippery atmosphere. They disrupt the entrenched networks of corruption, and expose the deceit and manipulation that have become shamelessly normalised. Of course, this can lead to a toxic atmosphere where those who value integrity are marginalised, silenced, or even persecuted. The corrupt establishment views trustworthiness as a liability, as a potential catalyst for change that could upend their power structures. No doubt, in such environments, maintaining integrity requires unrelenting courage, conviction, and perseverance.
Despite these challenges, there are individuals who rise above the fray, and earns trust through unfaltering duty and dedication to their values. To some, building trust is a matter of livelihood or business survival, – they patrol very treacherous and explosive environments where shortcuts and dishonesty may seem rewarding, but they stand firm and prove their worth through relentless integrity. Their journey may be longer, but the trust they earn at the end of the day is unshakable, it sets them apart as pillars of reliability.
Prof. Dora Akunyili is one embodiment and example of the essence of trustworthy leadership. She ranks so high in the difficult paths she walked. As the Director-General of NAFDAC, she waged war against counterfeit drugs with unyielding determination, – she confronted the entrenched corruption in the sector, survived assassination attempts and threats to her personal safety. Her commitment to integrity earned her 930 awards, which gives credence to her tireless efforts to safeguard public health. Prof Akunyili’s legacy is a sensitive reminder to all of us that trustworthiness is the currency that underpins effective leadership, and those who dare to stand for integrity will forever leave a forever memorable mark on the society.
Trust is unarguably scarce in our world, so, earning it in a corrupt society would mean a badge and emblem of honour. Those who persevere, and are unwavering in their commitment to integrity, become the standard-bearers of trustworthiness. We entrust with such persons greater responsibilities and bestow them with rewards, because staying steadfast in a society of decay makes their trustworthiness all the more valuable. They inspire others to follow in their footsteps and encourage a culture of accountability, transparency, and honesty. It is something achieveable, and we can.
