The mother of one of the 20 prospective NYSC members abducted in Imo State has narrated how her family borrowed money and received contributions from relatives, friends and other individuals to raise β¦6 million allegedly demanded for her sonβs release.
According to Alirat Wahab, the kidnappers initially demanded β¦50 million for each victim, but reduced the amount after the parents pleaded with them.
π΄ HOW THE RANSOM DEMAND CHANGED:
- Initial demand: β¦50m per victim
- Later reduced to β¦5m
- The kidnappers subsequently demanded β¦15m
- After further negotiations, the family eventually settled on β¦6m

The mother said the family did not have the money readily available. Relatives, friends and other individuals contributed amounts ranging from β¦5,000, β¦20,000 and β¦50,000, while the family also borrowed money to complete the β¦6m.
She said representatives of the families were instructed to meet in Ibadan before travelling to Imo State to deliver the ransom.
π΅ According to the family, they were instructed not to transfer the money into an account. Instead, representatives travelled to Imo and converted the money to dollars before delivering it.
The father of the victim also said the parents coordinated the ransom payments at Adamasingba, Ibadan, with some families reportedly contributing β¦5m, while his family contributed β¦6m.
He further alleged that each representative contributed β¦100,000 to cover the journey to Imo.
β οΈ CONFLICTING CLAIMS
The familyβs account contradicts the Imo State Governmentβs position that no ransom was paid for the release of the 20 victims.
The father strongly disputed the governmentβs claim, saying the parents pooled money together to meet the kidnappersβ demands.
The victims were eventually released after representatives reportedly delivered the money, according to the family.
The Police had confirmed the rescue of all 20 prospective corps members, who were abducted while travelling from Ibadan to their NYSC orientation camp in Abia State.
π They were rescued at Amakohia Ubi Village, Imo State, following sustained search-and-rescue operations.
